SEM programs are proliferating in the Northwest, and other parts of North America. This collection includes SEMHub resources that convey the purpose, structure and approach of specific SEM programs. Resources including guides, program websites and other customer-facing recruitment materials reflect a variety of different types of SEM program designs and go to market strategies. The collection also includes cross-cutting resources focused on specific SEM design elements and emerging program implementation strategies.

The collection provides useful examples that will be most useful for those involved in SEM program design, strategy, marketing, recruitment and implementation.

Canada Launches 50001 Ready Navigator Tool

The 50001 Ready Canada program recognizes Canadian facilities and buildings that attest to the implementation of an ISO 50001-based energy management system. The program is a self-paced, no-cost way for organizations to build a culture of structured energy improvement that leads to deeper and sustained savings that does not require any external audits or certifications.

California SEM Program 3-Cycle Design Guide

The California SEM Program 3-Cycle Design Guide uniquely provides a progressive, measurable approach to improving a customer’s energy management system (EnMS) over a six-year period and introduces integrated demand side management (IDSM) and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction strategies that complement the EnMS.

Energy Policy vs. Energy Plan

Establishing both an energy policy and an energy-improvement plan (aka, an energy plan) is crucial to the successful integration of Strategic Energy Management (SEM) into core business priorities and processes. These interrelated but discrete activities create the required conditions for long-term SEM success, including persistence of savings and continuous energy improvement.

The New Virtual Reality of SEM Engagement

Despite the odds, three Northwest SEM programs used an adaptable, customer-first approach to emerge on the tail end of a pandemic with stronger programs, higher participation rates and more ways than ever to engage and educate customers and occupants.

Cities Leading by Example

This document aims to help public building portfolio holders understand the benefits of the Public Buildings Portfolio Management process and outline the approach and key lessons learned for those ready to start their own program.

Best Practices for Energy Strategies and Supporting Technologies

This final report summarizes the engagements with three public building portfolios for the project entitled “Energy Efficiency Strategies and Technologies: Understanding Regional Best Practices,” funded by NEEA and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Incorporating DEI and Lean Management into SEM Planning

Developed by members of the Northwest SEM Collaborative, this resource describes principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and Lean Management that SEM participants can use to improve their energy management assessment plans.

Final Report: Northwest Research Pilots for 50001 Ready

NEEA and DOE convened regional stakeholders to identify and test ways that 50001 Ready can be integrated into local SEM programs, as well as to identify and surface tools and resources associated with 50001 Ready that may be of high value.

Energy Trust of Oregon: Commercial SEM Guide

The SEM curriculum focuses on simple changes—like optimizing building systems or adjusting occupancy sensors—that improve comfort, safety and operational performance. Based on your organization’s progress, Energy Trust of Oregon provides cash incentives for energy-saving actions.

Achieve Immediate and Ongoing Energy Savings

If your company hasn’t implemented an energy management program that approaches energy in the same way you do quality, safety or productivity, then you could be leaving big money on the table. Strategic Energy Management can cut energy use by up to 20% with minimal investment.

Tools and Methods for Addressing Autocorrelation in Energy Modeling

The ETSP team compiled this paper for the purposes of outlining the implications of autocorrelation in the context of SEM measurement and verification, and providing examples of how program implementers have successfully identified and treated the presence of autocorrelation in regression-based energy models.

Engaging Executive Sponsors

The ETSP working group compiled this paper for the purposes of outlining the implications of multicollinearity in the context of SEM measurement and verification, and providing examples of how program implementers have successfully identified and treated the presence of multicollinearity among a set of predictor variables.
